Comics In Class
Limited Capacity seats available

Modern comics originated in 1933 and flourished right through the Depression and WWII--even getting notice in the educational community--until Wertham’s Seduction of the Innocent turned the public and educational establishment against them and the resulting Comics Code Authority gutted the complexity and relevance of content. Although comics' narrative and artistic sophistication were rebuilt, and extended, through underground comics and have become increasingly popular with youth, they continue to be poorly understood by the general public and often deemed to be of low value. However, a new generation of savvy librarians and educators are bringing them into libraries and classrooms as promoters of literacy and as teaching tools. Come join Drew Edwards as he discusses the benefits of comics in class.
